Who do you love (as Bo Diddley said!) more Dad or Chips - as the advert goes. Well I know some friends for whom it would be a close run thing. But the big dilemma I have is which label do i love more? Motown have given us the fantastic pop gospel of Diana Ross and Martha Reeves, plus the indisputable talents of the male bands. But Chess gave us the amazing Folk Blues of Chuck Berry and Howlin Wolf, plus I think Mr Diddley mentioned above. And of course the magnificent Etta James - who is shamefully only known inthis country for the jeans advert of the 80's! Anyway - which one would you choose?! ?

The Waterboys. Are they Irish? I dont know. Went to see them the other night doing their An Appointment with Mr Yeats, a tribute to the poet. Partly the gig was a bit like 'the emperors new clothes' or a clap and standing ovation because it is a real blend of intelligent art. Mike Scott really reminds me of a cross betwen Mick Jagger and Richard Ashcroft. But what i want to know is if Mike Scott embraced an English (as distinct from 'British') icon would he be held up as such a genius. Instead 'getting in touch with his celtic side' is seen as great, whilst still maintaining his artistic integrity!
He and Steve Wickham are kind ofthe glimmer twins of folk roots. They both seem really geniune, if a little indulgent, but it was a great gig nonetheless (read review elsewhere onthe site!) Was it A House (the Dublin band?) who described the endless art that is out there - I cant see myself ever listening to 10% of what music is out there (and unfortunately some of even that 10% is crap!) I won't name names, but some of the stuff out there that is pretty poor! But to make my day yesterday I did hear two Johnny Thunders related tracks on the radio- how often do you hear that?! Top stuff.
The DEfinitive Grover Washington Jr Elektra Years ........ why do I bother, its like an entire album of Hill Street Blues Soundtrack! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yevI8xCAKuc with extra Sax. Great for those afterdinner soirées and the like. Let's call it the cheese platter!
Mr regualr poster i am not, and don't ever envisage being, but enjoying updating the site - hope you are enjoying reading any you have browsed over! The livereviews are about the only thing i really keep on top of - and not been to many gigs in recent weeks! So sorry its not an exciting daily (or even weekly!) read! Life gets in the way! Anyway - enjoy listening to everything and anything! |
