Lola - the Kinks song. Has anyone noticed how much the new Noah and The Whale Track sounds like it? (is it the lead single and title track from LIFEGOESON? Lola itself is a great uplifting track – on how life is full of allsorts – live and let live. Long before Macca’s Live and let die? An up lifting song about coming of age. Oh and the Noah and the Whales song is alright!

“Give me some music; music, moody food, Of us that trade in love.” Declared Shakespeare’s character Cleopatra in (obviously) Anthony and Cleopatra. And what a trade in love and human emotions the man I am off to see tonight, thrives in. Sooooooo excited. Ben Folds is playing Dublin and I am going. He is one of the current greats – not a stadium rocker, but a serious artist who avoids being a chin stroker – with the right balance of self mockery and self confidence – with a skill at the piano second – or at least an ability to entertain second to none. I remember him once slating the quality of the piano at a venue (the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall) – but it certainly didn’t seem to have an effect on his performance! His songs are always cleverly constructed and well executed live! I am a bit concerned about how many songs from this mediocre new album he has out with Nick Hornby – but he may be able to make them literally come alive on the stage! Fingers crossed! Gary Moore - legendary Norn Oerish guitarist has passed away. His licks from some of his solos were some of the first i ever learnt to play on guitar. Still got the Blues is a classic intro, although it was similar i seem to recall to the Parisienne Walkways - with Philo. but both are beauties.
He was stylish and classy (in his guitar playing at least - although a friend of mine interviewed him a few times and said he was a gent as well). (Although he did look a state in that Over the Hills and Far Away video!)! He was a left hander - but learnt to play guitar right handed - I don't know if this added to his style - but it certainly didn't hurt it! One of the best British blues rock guitarists ever. Hugely influenced by Peter Green in 60's Belfast he also went on to work with Phil Lynott - both in Thin Lizzy and Solo. Still able to turn on the charm with his guitar on more recent albums he really is worth listening to if you have not heard him. Some is a bit samey - but cherry pick what you like! He will be missed. Barbara Dickson has a new album out - but has anyone seen that video of 'I Know Him So Well' with Elaine Page and Barbara Dickson – EP is dressed in a pink dress and BD in a horrendous leather jacket?! Even the camera man stumbles!! (about minute and half into the vid!) In the official video they look pretty gaudy – but the TOTP is priceless! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oECo75PNdSg And they wore the same god aweful stuff a week later on german TV as well! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hqnfbkxLlo |
