Well it was for a funeral so I assumed it going to be Bridge of Troubled Water. Instead it was Unchained Melody.
To the best of my knowledge then and now Simon and Garf have never covered that Righteous Brothers song! I know of a terribly successful version by Wallace and Gromit – no sorry Baddel and Skinner? – Got it – Robson and Jerome.! But I do love the fact that despite being something like the fastest selling single of the 90s or some other disappointing statistic – it only merits a one line mention on the Wikipedia page!
Anyway – that is largely irrelevant – but it did get me thinking about how that could easily become ‘fact’ if the Chinese whisper every gets to it. Just like it Bob Marley and the Red Red Wine dilemma! Here there is a definite conspiracy of misinformation!
If you search Youtube, or any of the download / torrent sites (torrentbay, isohunt, pirate bay & more) – you have access to what purports to be a Bob Marley version of that song. It is not! That would not be a major problem – but for the fact that even some ‘blog’ and chat sites (yahoo Answers and Chacha) have started to give this myth time of day!
The song was written by Neil Diamond and then taken to bigger height in the early 80s by UB40. Again to the best of my knowledge Bob never covered it! (With regard to either of these though – bootleg copies greatly appreciated if either exist!)
