Why oh why, when she can give us songs as brilliantly delicate and yet sexual on things like Young, Willing and Able. Then the psychadelic (racially mixed) band she sprung out of - Rotary Connection with powerful shared vocals by Minnie and (presumably) Dave Scott on tracks like I am the Black Gold Of The Sun. There are some exceptional tracks on Minnie's collection, but some real flops as well. Maybe cherry pick it!!
Minnie Riperton. There was me thinking she was an untouchable icon of 60's and 70's black soul women with a voice as strong (but strongly different) as Aretha's. And then she goes and let's me hear her Anthology. Les Fleurs. And the 'climax' is Light My Fire with her and Jose Feliciano both crucifying it! I knew Jose had done it - I had seen him play live recently, but for her to waste her voice on a song that can't be bettered (and is seldom equalled!).

Well. Finally made it to Pere Lachaise Cemetry - and got to see Edith Piaf's grave. Beautifully understated. A great walk around the site as well. But ... get this! I didnt make it to the other big musicians grave - one Jim Morrisons! Oh well. not sure i missed much!
Hope anyone who hasn't makes it here soon! Oh well. In Paris now, so nothing major to report on the music front!! Loads of posters up for french artists who i have never heard of, and loads of Edith Piaf CD's for sale along the Seine (Left Banke -where of course the Love style band got their name?) but more a study in food and drink. from morning to night we have just been wandering from breakfast to lunch, via a beer! Then out to dinner for more food! Happy days! Off for a doze now before actually heading back out for a midgnight feast and a glass of Pecan beer (delicious!!)
As Mama Cass said- you can make your own kind of music (check it out on utube!) great song, a Weil/Mann song as well. Shame to see her old singing partner John Phillips in the press long after his death with an incest accusation. Instead let's listen to the music (or was that the Doobie's!) - Phillips had a great couple of solo albums out as well - one with the Rolling Stones as his session band! - check them out, they're great!
Anyway off to Paris for the weekend - so Je Ne Said pas, maybe I'll be lsitening to Claude Francois and Vanessa Paradis or preferrably a bit of Serge for a few days!! Will try and write more but before then does anyone know any good second hand record stores En Paris? bye for now. What a month i have had! Not that you care - you all just love music! First I quit my over paid job, now i have been focusing on getting up to date with crap. Then we have a bathroom leak and the landlord decides to replace the whole bathroom. Kicking us out for a week and expecting us to be grateful for a cowboy job on the bathroom! So we are moving from posh Ailesbury Road, Dublin 4 to trendy Dublin 6! Bring it on!
Anyway - really meant what i said about wanting this to be a daily update - but been struggling with the live pages (think my home broadband is too small so keeps crashing!) But now finally got most of them up give them a look! And - by the way, GREAT new album should be out by end of the year - Boo Hewerdine. God Bless The Pretty Things. BUY IT. He is brilliant!! |
